We are having so much fun, its hard to force myself to sit down at the computer! But, we now have a huge back-up of pictures and stories, so the next few days will be changing rapidly. I will be loading a lot of pictures for the next few blogs. Bob took around 270 and deleted almost 100 leaving, well, a bunch to choose from! By the way, if you tap on one picture, you can view them all enlarged, without the dialog.
We drove from the Duck Lake Lodge into Canada to visit the town of Waterton. Our friend, Paul, has spoken so highly of it that we knew we had to check it out since we were so close. It didn't disappoint us in any way. The mountains are breathtaking, the town is small and quaint and wildlife is abundant.
Waterton is not far across the Canadian border and is considered a part of Alberta. It is surrounded on 3 sides by mountains. We stopped at the visitor center on the way in and the cutest young lady pulled out a map and drew pictures and wrote upside down all over it of must sees and dos in the few days we had.
Our first adventure was a hike up Bears Hump Trail right behind the visitors center. It is about 800' almost straight up using switch backs and what a view from the top!
In a few of the pictures you will notice the wind kicked up. It was gusty enough to almost blow me off my feet. We got pictures of Middle Waterton Lake and Upper Waterton Lake.
This is the Upper Waterton Lake view with the town behind Bob.
This is the Middle Waterton Lake.
We were hungry when we descended so we drove straight to the Prince of Wales Hotel and had lunch in the lounge. Bob was thrilled with the architecture and we are in possession of pictures of the Hotel from up above, down below, to the side...
Bob is waiting for me in the main lobby. Not too shabby! Now compared to the ladies bathroom I just came from...Hmmm...
After lunch we walked down to the large park in the center/south side of the little town and there was a fabulous antique car show going on for the afternoon. There had to be 70-75 cars parked all around. After the tough climb up Bears Hump, this was a nice way to stroll away the rest of the afternoon.
The end of this day was a pleasant night at the Aspen Village Hotel in the center of town. Walking distance to anywhere.
And lastly, if you look at the hotel closely, you can see large hanging baskets of flowers. They were all in full bloom, and gorgeous! All the hotels, shops and structures were decked out in this lovely fashion. A side note: We were told that the total year round population of Waterton is 50 residents. Guess they love the flowers because the winters are a little harsh!!
