Mammoth Hot Springs

There are some parts of the park you just have to see each year. This is one. I asked Bob to take close up shots of the travertine this time to show detail.

Bob didn't feel like walking all the steps so he dropped me off at the top and I met him at the bottom and walked back up. There is a new spring that popped up last year for the first time right beside the parking lot and I wanted to see it's progress. It has been cordoned off now to keep people off the area and the parking has been moved back some.

All the steps in total allow for about one mile. We also walked around the new Albright Visitor Center and some of the old army barracks buildings. There is a lot of history in this particular area of the park.

I'm just going to post a number of pictures. The different coloration on the travertine terraces is stunning. The water flow moves about a foot each year. So areas that were wet and flowing are dry and others are now alive and pouring water out.

Click on the first picture and just look at the color and detail that is carved out by the boiling water.

This whole area was formed by an underground sea. The hot water dissolves the limestone creating the terraces.

Miles walked: 78
