Ice Lake

Another new hike for us. It was fun and relatively easy except for 2 little issues...but more on that later.

We were on the way back from West Yellowstone and had no one on campus at the cabins so pre-planned a small hike for this day.

The smoke was blowing away from us so the sky was pretty and breathing easier than normal.

The write-up on this area said there may be moose (sure, right!!) and/or Sandhill cranes and herons. We did see some birds but they were too far away to identify. At any rate, you can see by the pictures how calm the water was.

So, ok, the wind was blowing some :)

This burned out tree is defying gravity. It looks like an angel from the back.

Soo, I mentioned a little 'issue' with this hike? This is it. A 10 foot span of river with a log across. Really? I walked up and down the shoreline quite aways looking for an alternative, and there wasn't one. All this while Bob is practically dancing from one shoreline side to the other with encouragement. Yes, he crossed 3 times if I remember correctly.

Here I am using both hiking sticks as long as they would extend for stability and I crept across. Bob calls these actions shots, ha!

Anyone that knows me is aware that our daughter, Christine, took any balance genes I ever had and left me none.

The signs are somewhat hidden so you need to know where you are and where you want to go!

And here is the 2nd crossing. Another 10 foot span but this one at least had some logs under the main one so I could sit and scoot across until the last.

We finally made it to the Little Gibbon Falls. The drop off behind Bob was dramatic.

This is what I call being 'home free.' I could hear cars and knew we were about done. It was a lovely little hike overall, just those darn river crossings....

We did another close to home hike before this that I'm not posting on due to the 500 pictures and 12 (I could be exaggerating here) posts done in previous years. It was 9 miles and with the Ice Lake 4 miles we are up to 51 miles hiked.
