Ride Home from Lake Yellowstone

So, yesterday I talked about the Lodge Pole Pine tree and how it was used for the lodges. Here is a great example. This is the inside of the Lake Lodge. All of the posts and trusses and walls are made from the Lodge Pole Pine tree. Another example is the Old Faithful Inn, but that's for another time. (We haven't gone there yet this year).

Here is the view from the Lake Lodge. Not bad!

This is the Lake General Store a little farther down from the Lodge. It has a fully functional Diner which, had we known, we would have eaten in. Hmm, something to remember for next year perhaps! Note the trusses in the ceiling, yep, Lodge Pole Pines again.

This ceiling uses the Lodge Pole to hold up the pointed section of the roof with no cross beams. Very impressive. This design allows the snow to simple slide off the building and provide lowered maintenance.

We loved the store itself. It is one of the older buildings for this area and so well constructed.

Here is the front. Note all the steeply sloping roofs. Again, easier winter snow control.

So now we are driving home and got into a buffalo (aka bison) jam. Not the first we've been in, and probably not the last but fun, none the less. This guy looked like he was on a mission. This was in the middle of the buffalo rut. So there was a lot of  sniffing of females going on by the passing males.

This bad boy just finished peeing and rolling in the dirt to attract the females. Yeah, that about does it for me, ha!

Our view driving back through the park. We can't get over it! Mountains on all sides with rolling plains in between. Stunning!

As we got into Gardiner Bob spotted this lit up motel sign. It reminded him of the Motel in Psycho. Rather ominous looking!

And when we crested the hill going to the cabins, this was our view of the sunset. The camera can never do it justice, but we keep trying!
