Jackson Lake Lodge and Moose-Wilson Road

Jackson Lake Lodge was too expensive for us to spring for but we heard several people mention there are moose all around it. So we went to see for ourselves!

The lodge is more modern looking and as such Bob didn't take any pictures of it. But the scenery from the lodge, now that is impressive!

There was a short 2 mile hike above the hotel so we went up there to look down on Christian Pond and the surrounding marshland...and look for the elusive moose.

No surprises, nothing walking around, just birds. Still beautiful landscapes.

And so, we left the Lodge and headed north to Moose-Wilson Road. We even stopped to walk around on a bridge people had said they saw a moose walking around "just the night before"...yeah, right, ha!

The Moose-Wilson road runs SW from Moose to Teton Village. This route  is adjacent to a 1,106 acre Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve that Mr. Rockefeller bequeathed to Grand Teton NP before his death in 2004. The Preserve opened in 2007 to the public and has an 8-mile trail system as well as a road (such as it is!) to travel on to look for moose and other animals.

We drove the whole 8 miles the first time through and came back the second time to just explore on the trail for a while. I brought my watercolors and did a quick picture of the swampy area below me.

This is what I was looking at.

This is what I drew. I used only watercolors. I like the scenes better when I use pen and ink first. It's very fun and relaxing.

While I did this, Bob walked around taking pictures.

Time to head north. We passed this dam on the way down but didn't stop. It's funny how looking at an area from one direction is so different from the other way. Case in point. We didn't even notice this dam on the way down. It's very well done and quite impressive.

The Jackson Lake empties out here to form the Snake River which flows 800 miles through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington to its mouth on the Columbia River in eastern Washington. A few miles further north and we were back in Yellowstone. No moose but another great trip!

Total miles hiked: 85
