Earth Style Moon Scapes

What do you do when there isn't much time, the weather isn't cooperating but you need to get outside and play? Run around the 3 miles of Mammoth Hot Spring's boardwalks!

I romanticize that if I ever took a trip to the moon I already know what the surface would look like.

The plateaus of Mammoth Hot Springs have got to be a close mimic of the moon, although the moon is not so hot in temperature.

Mammoth's springs are always shifting due to the constant activity below the surface.

It is an amazing to be able to walk out onto the boardwalks and look straight down into the crevices.

Genius alert:
People who think they are infallible, check to see if anyone is looking and then walk out to a spring's edge to peer in. What they don't comprehend is the surface of these areas are so thin that human weight can break the crust and they can fall in and be cooked way before they could try to swim out or be rescued. Not a happy thought!

All that being said, this area is amazing with life and color.

I mentioned the weather earlier. So while we're out on the walk rain starts in earnest, I whip out my poncho and put it on. Bob whips out this flimsy plastic excuse for a poncho that is roughly 20 years old. It was completely sealed together and took both of us more than 5 minutes to get it on him. First attempt shows he put it on backwards. Even with it raining I had to snap a quick picture. It made it to the trash afterward :)

This is an original building in the town of Mammoth. It was used by the Army Corp of Engineers for mapping out and building the current road system.
