Behind and Below or Lollies Trail

Well, we were bored. We saw the weather on radar and the worst part was past us. Never mind that the wind has been gusting over 40 mph 24/7 for over a week.

Several trails around YS have trail marker's with stacked rocks and usually a post in the middle. It serves as a marker for the trails in summer and for winter skiers. However, this is a trail you can't ski on!

It was around 3:00pm and there's a nice little (or long) hike below our cabins that we should have plenty of time to traverse, going down to the river and along the trail for just a bit.

You just can't beat the views, and although we can see a lot of it from the cabin above, it's fun to see the features up closer.

This is a good example of basalt rock at the top of the mountain. The columnar structure is the easiest way to identify it. This was another mountain formed from a smaller volcano 1,000's of years ago.

We got all the way down and then heard thunder in the west. Okay, so we'll start back up because that's where a large storm blew in from in the morning. Normally there would be plenty of time. Not so much with the afore mentioned 40 mph wind gusts.

So Bob takes off with me behind. We forged our own trail through the sage, straight up. See that ridge line? To the top left you can see our cabins. That's the top. We made it in record time and to our cabin before the front hit us, barely.

And here's what we almost got caught in! This is looking down the Yellowstone River toward the City of Gardiner. It rained all evening and night so fiercely that we feared for the cabin foundations and roofs. All cabins withstood the trial and are still accounted for, whew!
