What The Elk Happened?

Time for our first hike brought us up close and personal with a small herd of about 10 elk mommas and their youngsters. We were walking down a path, not far from the parking area, headed down hill to view the river below when all Elk broke loose. In a dense thicket nearby the path, calves started 'barking' for their moms and moms starting appearing from behind, beside and above us to respond. There was a directional sign by us so we remained still and just watched the various reunions and then they all paraded down the hill to the water. Timing is everything, and for the second time, we were blessed with a special sighting. (Pictures 1, 2, 3).

From our back porch in Gardiner, MT we can see Mammoth Hot Springs inside Yellowstone which is about 10 miles away. It is the small, white area in the center of the picture with the steam rising up into the clouds. (Picture 4)

To reach the Overlook Cabins, where we are staying, you drive up a steep, rock strewn road, part of which is passable by only one car at a time. But we have some interesting landmarks to let us know that we are on the right path! (Picture 5)

  2. Awesome pix. It's looks like you have some pretty neat "neighbors". Did you get to see the geyser, I think it
was called Steamboat, that hadn't erupted in 8 years. It think it
happened just as you arrived. What a welcome! Love- Sherri
